Here’s my latest round up of competitions and submission calls:

Jesmond Library Creative Writing Competition. For all forms of creative writing (e.g. short stories, scripts, poems, etc.) of up to 1500 words on the theme of ‘The Midnight Hour’. Entry fee: £3, with all proceeds to the Library. Deadline: 11 January 2020. More details here.

Postbox Magazine. Short stories (1000 to 2000 words) for a biannual collection published by Postbox Press, the literary fiction imprint of Red Squirrel Press. Deadline: 31 December 2019. More details here.

Is Royalty Relevant? Poetry Competition. Poems (max 40 lines) about the relevance of royal families in today’s society. Free to enter. Deadline: 27 April 2020. More details here.

Nobrow Short Story Competition. Short stories or creative non-fiction (max 3000 words) on the theme of ‘The Censor’. Free to enter. Deadline: 9 December 2019. More details here.

Turnpike Magazine. Short stories (max 5000 words), poetry (up to 5 poems) and creative non-fiction (max 5000 words) on any theme, but ‘special consideration will be granted to pieces that explore positivity, gratitude, and other uplifting themes, as well as pieces written by underrepresented voices’. Deadline for January issue: 31 December 2019. More details here.

Lost Words Writing Competition. Contemporary short stories (500-1000 words) which use North East dialect words and phrases from the Word Bank of Lost Dialects at The Word (National Centre for the Written Word) as their inspiration. Free to enter. Deadline: 28 February 2020. More details here.

Science Fiction and Fantasy Writing Competition. Short science-fiction or fantasy stories (max 3000 words) for an anthology commissioned by The Word as part of WRITE Festival 2020. Free to enter. Deadline: 9 December 2019. More details here.

Writing Magazine Historical Fiction Competition. Historical (defined as anything over 50 years ago) short stories (1500-1700 words). Entry fees: £6 or £4 for subscribers. Deadline: 15 January 2020. More details here.

Spilling Cocoa over Martin Amis. Humorous poems (submit up to 3 at a time) for website which publishes a poem roughly once a week. No deadline. More details here.
