Here’s my latest list of themed publication opportunities. All are free to submit to/enter unless otherwise indicated.

Scottish Book Trust 50-Word Fiction Competition Stories of up to 50 words featuring a pair of wellies. Deadline: 30 November 2021.

Tyger Tyger Magazine Poems for children on the theme of beginnings. Deadline: 30 November 2021.

Scare Street Horror stories of between 3,000-7,000 words with a focus on ghosts, the supernatural, paranormal, monsters, and dark tales for inclusion in Night Terror anthology. Deadline: 30 November 2021.

Paper Swans Press Advent Calendar Micro-flash or micro-poetry (maximum three lines, no title) for 2021 advent calendar on the theme of winter or Christmas. Deadline: 4 December 2021 (earlier submissions preferred).

Writing Magazine Epistolary Short Story Competition Stories in epistolary form of between 1,500-1,700 words. Fee: £7.50 (£5.00 for subscribers). Deadline: 15 December 2021.

Sweetycat Press Flash fiction (between 500-1000 words) and poems (between 10 to 25 lines) on the theme of music or song – “music, songs, musical instruments, musicians (or a musician), or singing, must be incorporated in the story”. Deadline: December 15 2021.

Pure Slush Volume 5 Fiction, non-fiction, stories, or essays of between 150-1000 words and poetry of between 80-1000 words on the subject of work (paid or unpaid). Deadline: 31 December 2021.

Wolverhampton Literature Festival Poetry Competition Poems on the theme of sounds of the city. Fee: £4 for a single entry. £10 for three poems then £3 for each subsequent poem in that submission. Deadline: 31 December 2021.

The Ginkgo Prize for Ecopoetry Poems of any length and in any form that engage with the climate crisis. Fee: £7 for the first entry and £4 for each additional poem. Deadline: 31 January 2022.

The Glencairn Glass Short Story Competition Short stories of 2,000 words or less based on the theme of a crystal-clear crime. Deadline: 31 December 2021.

Flash Point Science Fiction Speculative fiction (works in which the setting is other than the real world such as science fiction, fantasy, and slipstream) stories from 100 to 1,000 words in length. Submit one story at a time. Payment of $15 per story. No deadline.

National Flash Fiction Day Anthology Submissions for the National Flash Fiction Day Anthology will be open between 1 December 2021-15 February 2022 on the theme of freedom. Full details will be available on the NFFD website from 1 December.
